Generally my iPhone vibrates when I have a new text, mention on twitter, tag on facebook or like on instagram. These alerts usually represent a funny comment or picture, a link to an education site or a new post on a friends blog. Never in my wildest dreams would I have ever thought an alert would pop up saying “Rockets Attack: Tel Aviv.” Well, at 10:31pm pst and 8:31am in Israel that is exactly what was on my screen. It is an alert that gives its users 15 seconds to find shelter from an imminent missile attack and, unfortunately, there is an app for that.
Red Alert, created by Kobi Snir, is simply described on iTunes as an app that “provides real time alerts every time a terrorist fires rockets, mortars or missiles into the State of Israel.” Having read the few reviews it seems to be liked and Mo Mo Ya Ya says “this app does exactly what it is supposed to do” thank G-d. 1967MustangGT500’s short and powerful review states, “wish I didn’t need this app.”
I love technology and I am glad that this app exists giving a few more seconds for its users to find safety. However, with all my heart, I also hate this app. It is a life-saving app while at the same time represents an evil and darkness that exists in our world.
May G-d protect our people, country and all the innocent civilians; Jew and non-Jew alike. May we one day live in a world where the only alerts that come up on our phones are ones of new youtube videos of kittens and baby chickens playing the bongos.
As I completed this post another alert just came up. “Rockets Attack: Moatza Ezorit Shaar Hanegev.” My thoughts and prayers are with you.
